Pastor Wang Lin’s Letter from Detention
Dear family in Christ,
Peace to you in the Lord!
Knowing that the Lord’s work continues to flourish fills my heart with joy. I often pray for each of you by name. Especially from 6:30–7:30 p.m., I have a quiet hour when I can pray alone—please feel free to join in intercession during that time.
Recently, God has often led me to reflect on Jesus washing His disciples’ feet—including Judas’s. Here, I also do many daily chores, and newcomers usually do even more: washing dishes, emptying leftover food buckets, mopping the floor, scrubbing the toilets, and so on. Many inmates dislike these tasks, but I still do them carefully, and because of this, I have also gained a lot of respect.
Here, people often need to help one another. No matter what their attitude is, I always try to help those I can. Before, I served you from the pulpit through preaching; now, inside here, I serve the inmates by kneeling on the floor to mop or to clean the toilets. It is still service. God lets us see that this world itself is our monastery. Wherever we are—so long as there are people—there is a field where we can and should serve. For “the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.”
I also hope that my service to the inmates here can indirectly become service to you outside. What I mean is this: because we are imprisoned, you who are outside may at least temporarily avoid some of the direct pressure. If what we bear can help lighten your burdens even a little, then I believe each of us will receive greater comfort because of it.
Lastly, I imagine that many of you have questions or worries because of recent events. In the face of our present situation, what can we do? How will God’s kingdom advance? What will the future look like? I also think about these things often here. As I carefully scrub the toilets or help my cellmates, the sense God gives me is this: no matter the era, no matter the circumstances, no matter where we are—so long as we continue to serve this world and wash the feet of those we encounter, the kingdom of God continues to grow.
For what measures us is not the “success” or “victory” that the world values, but the widening reach and impact of Christ’s service.
Dear family, let us strive together—with all our heart—whether inside or outside, to serve the people around us and wash their feet. In this way, the body of Christ grows steadily, solidly, and without hindrance.
Emmanuel!
Detained,
Pastor Wang Lin
